To paraphrase Mark Twain, someone who can read but doesn't isn't any better off than one who can't read.  Don't
just read what is assigned in class, but rather what interests you.  Reading for enjoyment allows you to learn something
of your choosing, or lets you select the experience.  The faculty and staff at Sloan-Hendrix demonstrate this through their wide range in reading tastes.  They read constantly to gain knowledge, to better themselves, and for enjoyment.  Below are lists of what they have been reading lately.  What have you been reading?  If any student cares to share their reading lists with us send email to rgriffin@shsd.k12.ar.us or drop a note by Mrs. Holland's or Mr. Griffin's class.

Angelica Clem So many books, so little time!!! Of course, the top of the list is The Bible and devotional books.  My particular favorites are those authored by Kay Arthur, Linda Dillow, Elizabeth George, and Beth Moore.  I have also enjoyed the works of a local authoress, Mrs. Altha Murphy:  Naked Ears, I Ain’t Up Yet, and The Pastor’s Helpmate.  For practical reading purposes I read several cookbooks, cooking and health magazines.  I also enjoy newspapers (especially those published locally).  I also peruse many of the books from my husband’s library—commentaries, biblical backgrounds, language studies, biographies, and biblical surveys.  My favorite of favorites (apart from The Bible) is the biography of George Muller of Bristol by A.T. Pierson.
Kristi Comadoll I like to read Nicholas Sparks and some of Nora Roberts, romance-suspense.
Melissa Dean I enjoy reading so many different types of books. I love many of the classics such as Catcher In the Rye and Pride and Prejudice. Here lately I have been reading many adolescent fiction books so I can recommend them to my students. I have enjoyed The House of Night series, Mortal Instruments series, Wicked Lovely, The Hunger Games, and so many others that I really don't have enough room to name them all.
Sue Dail I'm reading The True Blood series, written by an Arkansas author. I just finished The Host by Stephanie Meyer. Also looking forward to the new 39 Clues book.
David Davis
Becky Foreman I recently have read “Ford County” by John Grisham. It is a collection of his short stories. Some of the stories are comical because they are similar to what and where we live; however, this was my least favorite of all of his books. I have also read Nicholas Sparks, “The Last Song.”  This one is the movie that is coming out this spring starring Miley Cyrus. It is about divorced parents and the children get “dumped” on the dad for the summer. However, there is a reason for them to have to spend the summer with their dad. You’ll have to read it to find out. Good book. Good story.  And I have read My Sister's Keeper *** but sad.

Lisa Hill I enjoy reading historical fiction, books about home decorating and gardening, and re-reading the books that I assign to my classes. I am beginning with Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
Lisa Holland I’ve always enjoyed reading. I grew up in a house of readers. My mother was a reader, my sister read a set of encyclopedias for fun, and my great aunt was the town librarian. There was no question, if you lived in this house you read. Unfortunately, I don’t read as much as I used to or as I would like. Some books I enjoyed and have read more than once include: The Little House Books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck. Some things I’ve read in the past year include Last Lecture by Randy Pausch, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas by John Boyne, and Skipping Christmas by John Grisham.
Martha Johnson I read The Bible and Jonesboro Sun every morning and then read myself to sleep at night. I enjoy books by Mary Higgins Clark, John Grisham, James Patterson, Nicholas Sparks and always get their latest to read as it comes out. This summer I “sorta” got hooked on some Amish books by Wanda Brunsetter and Karen Kingsbury. The Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder have to be reread every few years as well as Gone with the Wind.

Any Nicholas Sparks or John Grisham books -- Message in the Bottle, A Walk to Remember, A Painted House etc., Tuesdays with Morrie, A Child Called It. Reread for the third time Gone With the Wind and Shepherd of the Hills --- My reading materials now are more geared toward parenting --- Parents magazine, Parenting magazine, Carley and I are a member of the Dr. Seuss Book Club and get two new books every 2 weeks that we read until the new ones come. Jones series by Barbara Park.
Scott Nichols Trusting God by Max Lucado, player manuals
Kathy Parker I just finished Assignment Rescue:  An Autobiography by Varian Fry and I have put Do Hard Things by Alex and Brett Harrison on hold because I am reading Nickel and Dimed which is by a freelance writer who spent several months working for minimum wage to show how difficult it is to live at all, let alone decently, on so little money.
Terrie Ponder Recently, I have read The Bible, The City of Ember, Sparks, and Bridge to Terabithia.  I enjoy the chapter books that I share and read to students, but I try to read The Bible the most.  It is definitely the most important book.

(a book which relates Biblical moments with baseball terminology and moments), In a Pit With a Lion (a somewhat Biblical book about how to deal with troublesome times and prosper), and The Kind of Man Every Man Should Be (a book which explains how the male population in today's day and age is veering away from the way that God intended men to be, and how to help young men lead and act). I also read magazines such as Men's Health, GQ, ESPN's Magazine, and Sports Illustrated.
