On Friday, April 4, the Sloan-Hendrix Quiz Bowl Team, braving high water while the rest of Sloan-Hendrix took
the day off, traveled to Hot Springs to enter a battle of the mind with other Quiz Bowlers from around the state.
The SHHS team finished third in district competition, qualifying them for the state finals. Team members attending
the competition were Shawn Archer, Malcolm Ashlock, Ryan Difani, Sara Groves, Austin Kiker (score keeper),
Lindsey Needham (score keeper), Kara O’Neal, Nicky Patterson, Samantha Smith (captain), and Colton Witt.
The team was accompanied by Sloan-Hendrix Quiz Bowl coach, Ms. Teresa Lawrey and Mr. Brian Keough, who
drove the bus. After arriving in the historic city of Hot Springs, the famished team members took repast at Ryan’s,
and then mentally prepared themselves for the rest of the evening by playing Wii video games and relaxing around
the motel. Kara O’Neal said “The challenge of combining the hand eye coordination with mental acuity definitely
helped prepare me for the rigors of Quiz Bowl.” On Saturday morning, refreshed from their slumber and breakfast,
the team arrived at Hot Springs National Park Community College and quickly entered game mode. Over the next
six hours, the team battled the best that the state could throw at them playing a total of five games. Although they
lost four in squeakers, Sloan-Hendrix was triumphant over district rival BIC. According to Malcolm Ashlock,
“That made it all worth while.” Following elimination, the exhausted team began the long, journey home with heads
held high in triumph. After all, they are the first Sloan-Hendrix Quiz Bowl Team to make it to state. Quiz Bowl
members are already planning strategies to make it into next year’s state finals. Team Captain Samantha Smith
stated “Geography is one of our strengths, but we obviously really need to work on mythology and literature.”
“We all had such a good time, that we plan to work extra hard to get to go again next year,” said Nicky
Patterson.
