On Tuesday, October 4, thirty members
of the Sloan-Hendrix FBLA attended the District II Fall
Leadership Conference in the Convocation Center at Arkansas
State University. The first general session opened
with a call to order by the State Vice President. An
invocation was given by a middle school member from Piggott.
The local American Legion presented the colors and then gave
a brief history of the flag.
The keynote speaker for the
conference was ASU head football coach, Hugh Freeze.
Coach Freeze is probably best known for his real life role
as Michael Oherís high school coach. Oherís journey
from surviving the streets of Memphis to earning a spot in
the NFL was the inspiration for the book/movie, The Blind
Side. Freeze encouraged students to have faith and
a good attitude. He encouraged them to have a goal in
life and put a plan in action to attain that goal.
One of the most touching moments of
the conference came when Coach Freeze presented a grand
prize to a member of the audience. The drawing was
actually a setup to grant a wish to a young man from
Mountain Home. For several years, one of the service
projects of District II FBLA has been to support the efforts
of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. On Tuesday, FBLA
members got to be a part of making a wish come true.
The young man and his family will be taking a Disney cruise.
After a short break, the second
general session opened with the FBLA pledge, creed, and the
parade of presidents. A representative from each
school introduced themselves, stated the number of members
present and made a donation to the Arkansas Childrenís
Hospital. Sloan-Hendrix members were asked to give a
dollar each. Between the members and SH staff, a
donation of $45 was presented by the Sloan-Hendrix chapter
At the conclusion of the meeting,
members enjoyed a couple of hours at Caraway Plaza where
they ate and shopped.
