On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, members of the Sloan-Hendrix Future Business Leaders of America attended the District II Fall Conference in Jonesboro, Arkansas, at the Arkansas State University Convocation Center.  Over 1,900 students from across Northeast Arkansas were in attendance.
            Keynote speaker for the conference was head coach for the ASU Red Wolves baseball team, Tommy Raffo.  The main focus of Coach Raffo’s address was building character from “good” to “great.”  According to him, there are five focus areas;

Be a first class citizen.  In all that you do, be highly principled.  Always be neat in appearance, take care of grooming and clothing.  No drugs or alcohol.

Commit to excellence.  In everything you do, do your best.  Be committed in academics, sports, hobbies, and chores.  Be the best “person” you can be.

Pay attention to detail.  Ordinary things are important.

Be good to the little guy.  Everyone deserves to be treated fairly.  Be respectful to all.

Give the effort.  In everything you do, do the best you can.  Always give 100%.

Coach Raffo encouraged members to wrap these five areas around the “Big A” which is your attitude.  Attitude is a state of mind that only you can control.  It can keep you going or it can cripple you.  It’s up to each individual person to choose a positive attitude.
            Other speakers at the conference included representatives from the various service projects that FBLA supports such as Arkansas Children’s Hospital, March of Dimes, and Make-A-Wish Foundation.  A parade of presidents was held to introduce each chapter and allow each chapter to make a donation to Make-A-Wish or Arkansas Children’s Hospital.
            At the conclusion of the conference, the Sloan-Hendrix chapter went to Caraway Plaza to eat some lunch and do a little shopping.
